Is The Diagnosis Of ATTR-cm Amyloidosis A Death Sentence For A 78 Year Old Man?

A MyAmyloidosisTeam Member asked a question 💭

He took tafamidis for a couple of months to no avail. His last hospitalization, my dad was sent home under hospice care, but is there another route we can take as far as a different medicine or is he too far along to do anything more?

Keep trying different cardiologists. I don’t know how sick he is but there must be something they can do for him.

I have been taking tafamidis for nine months. I learned after taking this drug, not to take it near the next snack/meal (at least one hour delay for eating both before and after eating). Otherwise, the drug causes diarrhea. I lost some weight which I consider good while experimenting how my body reacts to the tafamidis. After Thanksgiving, including wine, the body became more tolerant of tafamidis but occasionally, I still get diarrhea. Hope this helps? hATTR v122i

Tafamidis is the only FDA approved drug for the treatment of ATTR CM. Why did he stop taking it after two doses? It can take up to 18 months for the drug to reach it's full efficacy. The drug is designed to lower the circulating TTR proteins in the body. It will not repair any damage that has already occurred. He could try the drug Diflunisal but it can be hard on the stomach for some patients
