Burning Sensation In Mouth.....

A MyAmyloidosisTeam Member asked a question 💭
New Jersey City, NJ

Good morning all! About 2 days ago I began having mouth pain. I can best describe it as if I drank something very hot. My tongue constantly has a burning sensation, as well as the roof of my mouth. It is painful to brush my teeth and eat. Has anyone diagnosed with Amyloidosis had these symptoms? Is there anything I can do to ease the burning sensation? I have not changed mouthwash, toothpaste, etc and I did NOT drink any hot beverages. I am a bit fearful due to my Edwards Sapien aortic… read more

Burning sensations in the mouth, including the tongue and roof, can sometimes be linked to amyloidosis, particularly if amyloid deposits are affecting the tongue or surrounding tissues. This condition, known as macroglossia, can cause tongue pain, burning, or difficulty chewing and swallowing. Given your history and the PET/CT findings, it’s essential to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

To ease the burning sensation, you might try:

1. Rinsing with a mild saltwater solution to soothe irritation.
2. Avoiding spicy, acidic, or very hot foods that could worsen the discomfort.
3. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush to minimize pain while brushing.

Given your Edwards Sapien valve and the risk of infection, it’s critical to consult your cardiologist or hematologist promptly. They may recommend further tests or a biopsy to investigate the PET/CT findings and rule out amyloid involvement or other causes. Early intervention is key to managing symptoms and preventing complications.
