Can Tafamidis Be Given To Someone With AL ?
Tafamidis is NOT used, nor is it approved for the treatment of AL amyloidosis! AL amyloidosis is a blood disorder that is manufactured in the bone marrow and requires chemo/immunotherapy to treat. TTR amyloid is made by the liver and the treatment is entirely different. Go to www.vyndamax.com to see the FDA APPROVED uses for the drug. AL amyloidosis is NOT one of them!
It is possible (but extremely rare) for someone to have ATTR and AL amyloidosis at the same time. Each type of amyloidosis would still require Different treatments to control both. Because treatments have improved for AL amyloidosis to the point of patients living longer, we have seen some AL patients develop wild type amyloidosis which is a disease of old age. But again, this is very rare and both types need their separate treatments to control them.
Terri, on the onset of the disease my home cardiologist sent me to the Huntsman Cancer Center at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City since he had no information on my condition since it was diagnosed by my Hematologist which I saw for low white blood cell count.
The doctor at Huntsman Cancer Center confirmed the Amyloidosis. Huntsman has a grant program to help with the Vyndamax prescription cost. This was 3 years ago.
As far as working, well, I'm still here. I don't know which stage I'm in. I'll ask my cardio doctor to see if he knows how to find out.
That would be great 😊. I hope it is working for you.
PhiTerry, if you don’t mind me asking how does the Doctor prescribe you the medication when you have AL like me? And is it working for you? Can you tell me about it?
No. It’s for TTR.
