Jim just had a swallow test 2 weeks ago. He was admitted with bacteria pneumonia twice in August, then was referred to Infectous disease who scheduled the test. Jim said the test was painless, it showed that he is aspirating his drink & food which explained the pneumonia. Now he has swallowing exercises for the throat muscles. He has a follow-up appt & we will see if they are helping.

A barium swallow, also known as an esophagogram, is a radiographic imaging test that examines the pharynx and esophagus: The purpose of the test is to see if your swallowing mechanism has any problems, known medically as Dysphagia.

Choking when eating/drinking or having speaking issues may be indicators of structural defects or nerve related issues in your esophagus or pharynx. It may also reveal deficiencies in your 35 muscles involved in swallowing function.
