Question About Chemo For Al

A MyAmyloidosisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Bay City, MI

My husband has his 1st chemo next week. He would like to know how it is administered & how long it takes. Do you have to stay for a period of time?

Usually the first time is the longest. Can’t really remember but I want to say 4 or 5 hours. They want to make sure there’s no side effects. After that it’s only about 2 hours. When I was doing my weekly chemo it was two shots (velcade & darzalex) in the belly (really not too bad) and a bunch of pills. Steroid, Tylenol, benedryl, and I was on cyclophosphamide. Bring a book, snacks or sometimes they have a tv. Just sit back and relax and know you’re on the road to beating this. ❤️

Carl & Theresa, thank you so much for the info. He is a little apprehensive about this, which is understandable. I told him about the fabulous people on this support group!
We will get through this just as you have,
Have a beautiful, blessed Sunday!

It is hard to give an exact answer as to length as to how long it takes but certainly the 1st visit was my longest since a special nurse went in detail what we needed to know.
After that I was normally done in 2 hours although sometimes the lab would be backed up or all chairs were full and we had to wait a little. Also true of of the times we saw the doctor each month.
Infusion was done in my arm. I took the benedryl and had a decent sleep while everything was being done.
I learned early on that it was best to have the blood drawn and the iv line in my left arm. I am right handed so going to the bathroom is easier if the need arises.
My center has snacks available as well as drinks.
My center has 25 chairs and they are typically full. So 25 infusions going on with all kinds of fluids and bells going off every time a bag empties creates a bit of noise but nothing bad. All of the staff in the room are registered nurses. All of them are very nice and in talking with people who had used other centers that is not always true. One lady made 1 visit to a center down the road and never went back. The lady was on her 2nd bout of cancer and knew how things should be.
I received the usual chemo drugs and also large doses of nausea medication.
After all the drugs were infused I would wait 10 minutes and have my BP checked. Never had a problem with BP.
Some folks have problems with the chemo. I never had any problem.
I was given a prescription for dexamethasone and took 5 pills -20mg total-when I arrived at the center. By the time I got home felt better and that lasted for 2 1/2 days till the steroid wore off and I would be tired. Just part of the process.
I will say a prayer for you and your husband tonight.
The 2 of you can do this!
