Weightlifting And Amyloidosis:

A MyAmyloidosisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Brooklyn, NY

My doctor cautioned me against lifting heavy weights. He feels this would further harden my already hardened and enlarged heart. He suggests very easy weights but with more repetitions which would make this more of an aerobic exercise. Does anyone in the community have any weight exercise experience they may wish to share?

One thing not mentioned that could greatly impact patients with wild type amyloidosis is the increased risk of bicep tendon tears. For that reason alone, I would avoid lifting weights. You most certainly need to consult with your cardiologist before starting any type of exercise regimen.

Wow, your doctor said that!
Weights are critical in keeping your heart healthy. Use lighter weights and more reps.? My heart is 26mm thick and hasn’t gotten any thicker in three years. I use weights 4 times per week. That plus aerobics are very important.

My husband’s doctor said absolutely no weights but cardio as tolerated. My husband was/is very active (former athlete), we walk a lot more and stationary bike. Squats, lunges, weight bearing exercise, etc. His doctor told him the heart’s a muscle, so when you’re lifting weights you’re thickening muscles, not something someone with Amyloidosis wants to do. That’s what we were told. This seems to affect people differently so I’m sure your doctor knows best for you. Stay well!

I try and do “light” (compared to pre-diagnosis and treatments) weight lifting almost every day. I’m 64 years old and I nowadays I can’t lift heavy anymore but I feel I still get benefit from lighter/more reps. Plus, mentally it makes me feel a little more “normal” and gives me a chance to take a break from constantly thinking about having this disease and everything that goes with it. I have some heart damage from my AL-Amy. I just slow my pace a bit, take longer rests between sets, but still try and knock out a workout.
