HELP! Medicare CIGNA Insurance

A MyAmyloidosisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Orange, CA

I’ve been on Vyndamax 3 years. They refuse to refill Rx. They want me to go on Vyndaquel which is 4 PILLS A DAY.

I’ve got a Board Doctor Director at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange, CA.
He said Insurance is bad all about $.

Please give me any suggestions!

My spouse has cardiac amyloidosis. He is on Vyndaqel due to the cost of Vyndamax being out of our $ range. He got used to the 4 pills quickly and is doing well on the drug with no side effects. Our thinking is that taking 4 pills rather than 1 with Vyndamax, is a small price to pay to get on the medication as soon as possible. He lost 45 pounds before diagnosis and hospital stay. He has now gained back 32 pounds and his breathing issues are minimal. Best of luck to you!

I have seen patients taking Amvuttra for their ATTRv complaining about Cigna no longer covering their drug. They said it was because Cignas' pharmacy provider CVS, took it off of the formulary this year. They may have done the same thing with Vyndamax. Vyndaqel is essentially the same drug, just a different dosage and a slightly different formulation. It should work just as well as Vyndamax. Have you contacted your case manager at www.vyndalink.com to see if they can offer you any assistance?

This is also my understanding from my reading. Vyndamax and vyndaqel are the same drug in different forms. Regarding the other issue, wild type is a type of Attr.

From Pfizers website:

Both Vyndaqel and Vyndamax contain the same active ingredient called tafamidis. The difference between Vyndaqel and Vyndamax lies in the form of tafamidis they contain.

Vyndaqel contains the micronized meglumine salt of tafamidis, while Vyndamax contains the free acid form of tafamidis. Vyndamax was developed for patient convenience and this formulation allows patients to take just one capsule once per day. Patients taking Vyndaqel, on the other hand, need to take four capsules once a day.

Vyndaqel and Vyndamax are so similar that Pfizer was able to gain US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for Vyndamax using its clinical trial data for Vyndaqel. Treatment with Vyndaqel or Vyndamax is intended to reduce death and hospitalization due to heart problems in people with ATTR-CM.

In a study, VYNDAMAX 61 mg was shown to work the same way as VYNDAQEL 80 mg.

In US it’s either VYNDAMAX 61 mg 1 x or VYNDAQEL 20 mg 4 x
