How Long Did It Take For A Biopsy To Be Typed To Know What Type Of Amyloidosis You Have?

A MyAmyloidosisTeam Member asked a question 💭
Ludlow, VT

I was diagnosed 5 weeks ago and am still waiting for the Mayo clinic to type the biopsy. It's scary not knowing what type I have and waiting to find out what treatment plan the doctor is going to put me on.

Mass Spectrometry testing at Mayo usually takes about three weeks to complete. Was your biopsy done at Mayo or did it have to be shipped to them. If it had to be shipped, I would very with the doctor who did the biopsy that the samples were indeed shipped and on what date. It took three months for my local doctors office to ship one of my biopsies to BU. Needless to say I was livid when I found that out and I threatened to come sit in their office and loudly complain about their mishandling of my slides. They shipped it that week to Boston. Be the squeaky wheel and call and ask them to check on the holdup.

Peter that is exactly what my local hospital did. Now is the time to demand that it be sent to Mayo for mass spectrometry testing. Threaten to call a lawyer if you must. You have a right to have your slides sent to Mayo for this testing. You cannot begin treatment until you know what type of amyloid it is and Mass Spectrometry is the most accurate way to do that.

Thanks for the update. I'm having a heart biopsy next Tuesday and I have been told that they will be able to tell me the results the same day, or the following day. The wait is the scariest part right now.

I had two different tests on my biopsy performed by the Cleveland Clinic. Each time they reported within a week of the test but, unfortunately, they could not determine the type. I have been waiting about four weeks to see a specialist who can perform other tests (e.g., blood). in an attempt to determine the type.
